This free futures position size calculator helps traders determine how many contracts to trade based on account equity, risk percentage, stop loss distance, and reward-to-risk objective. It covers 16 instruments including ES, MES, NQ, MNQ, CL, MCL, GC, MGC, 6E, M6E, ZN, ZB, YM, MYM, RTY, and M2K — returning exact contract counts, tick values, per-trade P&L, and 3-trade session projections instantly.
The core formula is: contracts = (account size × risk %) ÷ (stop distance × point value + round-trip commission). For example, a $20,000 account risking 1% with a 4-point stop on MES (point value $5.00) gives: $200 ÷ ($20 + $1.06) = 9 contracts. This calculator handles that math automatically and updates in real time as you adjust inputs.
The ES (E-mini S&P 500) has a tick value of $12.50 and a point value of $50. The MES (Micro E-mini S&P 500) is one-tenth the size at $1.25 per tick and $5 per point. NQ ticks at $5.00 per tick ($20/point) and MNQ at $0.50 per tick ($2/point). Crude oil (CL) ticks at $10 per tick ($1,000/point) and gold (GC) at $10 per tick ($100/point).
Micro futures (MES, MNQ, MGC, MCL, M6E, MYM, M2K) are exactly one-tenth the notional value of their standard mini equivalents. Trading 10 MES gives the same market exposure as 1 ES, but with 1/10th the dollar risk per tick. Micros are well-suited for smaller accounts and for traders who want more precise position sizing. At 10+ micros, switching to 1 mini contract reduces total commission cost and simplifies execution.
Your reward-to-risk (R:R) ratio determines how often you need to be right to be profitable. At 2:1 R:R, the breakeven win rate net of commissions is approximately 34%. At 1.5:1 it rises to roughly 41%. At 1:1 you need to win more than 50% just to cover costs. This calculator displays the exact breakeven win rate for your chosen R:R and commission rate.
